September is here and my oldest is off to third grade. I’ve been very apprehensive with school starting again. Last year was quite a transition for Gabriel. The emotional rollercoaster wore me down. So this year, I decided it was best to play it cool and be as laid back as possible–not one of my strong suits. I let him choose his own clothes and backpack. (Personally, I am not a fan of Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles or camouflage. I would have preferred the preppy look and wanted to veto both.) I also didn’t do a countdown or decorate the house, And gasp! I stayed behind on the first day of school. Yes, it hurt a but that he didn’t choose me to drop him off but at least I got to stay in my PJs. (I’ll remind him of this particular diss when he’s older and wants a ride to the mall.) Again, all this for the sake of “being cool.”
And here’s my son’s first day of school picture. As you can see he values capturing the moment as much as me. HA!
What a character! Okay, here’s a better one:
All week I fretted, waiting for the emotional timebomb to explode. I took some time to document his learning milestones. Reading is a big one! In second grade he moved to chapter books and reading on his own. As his reading skills improved so did his confidence. He might not be reading the classics yet but he’s getting there. I’m anxiously awaiting the days of Greek mythology and Harry Potter.
I love the bookish elements of the page. The travel-themed tags highlight how learning “opens the world”. I discreetly took this picture with my phone at the library. I couldn’t resist. I’m just so proud seeing him reading next to a stack of books.
This fabulous Studio Calico paper is perfect for his school album. Gabriel’s favorite teacher last year worked closely with him and not only improved his reading skills but also his confidence and ability to stay focused. I’m grateful for everything she did. Especially for teaching him how important it is to take the time to focus when learning–something that my overeager boy forgets way too often.
After one week, I am happy to report the good news! No drama, no crying, no sadness, just smooth sailing. I am relieved, happy, and ready to stalk him for some better pictures. Happy Monday everyone!
